Gloucester Mustangs 80 pounders win the WJYFL Championship (11/23/13)

Jacob Zearfoss #33 breaks loose for a long TD
On November 23rd, the Gloucester Mustangs 80 pound squad  traveled an hour up north to face the Maple Shade Tigers at Robbinsville High School.  The Mustangs packed 3 buses full of players, coaches, cheerleaders, parents, and fans.  The enviroment was something different for the boys, playing on not at a High School, but on a turf field.  This wasn't their first game on turf, but the setting was different than any other game they had this season.  The Tigers were (9-1) on their to the North Conference crown, their lone loss was a 26-0 defeat at the hands of Gloucester.  The Mustangs would strike first in the 2nd quarter as Jacob Zearfoss took a pitch around the right end, cut it up the middle and broke numerous tackles on his way to the end zone.  His extra point would give the Mustangs a 7-0 lead.  After a quick 3 and out, the Mustangs struck again on their second play as John Daily ran for a 30 yd TD for the Mustangs, another Zearfoss extra pt gave Gloucester a 14-0 lead.  Daily also added an INT that preserved the 14 pt lead that they took to halftime.
Gloucester would receive the 2nd half kick, and they scored on both of their first two 2nd half drives giving them a 26-0 lead as Jacob Zearfoss scored both TDs giving him 3 on the day, and this game was over.
Kaleb Wright #56 tackles Maple Shade's QB
Jacob Zearfoss #33 runs over the defender
Hector Sanchez #34 scores a 4th quarter TD

John Daily #5 breaks loose for 2 TDs on the day
The Gloucester defense made a bunch of great plays on the day holding down a prolific Maple Shade offense.  Derek Levins, Leo Curran, Justice Dolson, Kaleb Wright, and Maddox Zane had the Shade QB on the run all game.  The corners Aydan Hagan and Josh Dockery did a great job containing him, and Dominic Ryan & Hector Sanchez made a few plays keeping him from long runs.  Gloucester's offensive line wasn't finished as Jack Radlinger, Nick Ekimoglou, Jason Allen, Andrew Pinto, Dom Spencer, Leo Curran, Hector Sanchez, and Kaleb Wright opened big holes all day.  Hector Sanchez got his chance in the backfield and didn't disappoint with a long TD run in the 4th quarter, Aydan Hagan rounded out the scoring with a QB sneak giving Gloucester a 39-0 lead.  Maple Shade's Sean Loomis would score a TD and extra point on the last play of the game for the Tigers, but it wasn't enough as the Mustangs would take home a 39-7 win.  Gloucester stayed perfect on the season, going (11-0) and winning the West Jersey Youth Football League 80 pound Championship.  The Coaches were Head Coach: Chad Zearfoss, Offensive Coordinator: Ziggy Zearfoss, Assistants: Rich Dolson, Dave Wright, John Daily, Rob Radlinger, Scott Loughlin, Todd Zane, and Harry Ulmer.

Mustangs 60s and 80s crowned Conference Champions (Nov 11th-17th)

60 lb offense huddles before the play is called
#16 Mason Widman had 4 TDs for the Mustangs
On November 16th, the 60 pound Mustangs hosted the Oaklyn Cougars in a rematch of an early season matchup that Gloucester won 20-12 giving the Cougars their only loss of the season.  In a battle of (8-1) teams, the Cougars came out ready to play striking first and taking a 7-0 lead.  The Mustangs would get on the board with a TD, but trailed 13-6 at the half.  This was just the second game all season, Gloucester trailed at the half.  That lead wouldn't last long into the 3rd quarter, as Gloucester recovered an Oaklyn fumble, and 1 play later Mason Widman ran around the end for a 40 yd score which was the 1st of his 4 TDs in the second half.  Anthony Capano and Donovan Robinson added extra points for the Mustangs.  Gloucester's Ryan Malone added another score in the 2nd half as the Mustangs went on to win 38-26 giving them a (9-1) record to end the season as the WJYFL South Conference Champions.  Great Job Boys!

Ryan Malone #22 scores one of his 2 TDs on the day

Gloucester's defense looks ready for action
On November 16th, the 80 lb Mustangs hosted (8-1) St. Petes in the South Conference Championship.  The game was a rematch of a game two weeks prior that Gloucester won 24-13 after trailing 13-12 in the 4th quarter.  This game would be a dog fight.  The Mustangs controlled the game from the first whistle, holding the Saints to just two 1st downs.  Gloucester struck first on a 14 yard TD pass from Aydan Hagan to John Daily.  The Saints would answer right back after #2 broke loose for a 68 yd run falling at the 1 yard line, #1 would punch it in to tie it up at 6.  Gloucester would control the ball for the rest of the game moving down the field, and playing the majority of the 2nd half inside St. Petes 25 yard line, but the Mustangs could not punch it in.  In the 3rd quarter, Jacob Zearfoss broke loose for a first down and spun off the defender looking for more yards, but the Saints defender knocked the ball loose ending Gloucester's drive.  After a 3 and out, Gloucester would get the ball right back and go to work.  After another first down, a key 3rd down play resulted in a false start penalty that would back the Mustangs up and they turned it over on downs.  St. Petes would get one last chance, but Gloucester stuffed them 3 straight plays to end regulation with the score still tied.
#5 John Daily catches TD pass from #7 Aydan Hagan for early Gloucester lead

#33 Jacob Zearfoss scores the game winning TD in OT
In Overtime, Gloucester won the toss and chose defense.  The Saints started off with a 4 yard gain on first down, and 3 yards on second down. On third down, the Saints luckily recovered a fumble that was forced by Gloucester by disrupting the handoff exchange.  With a 4th and 6, St. Pete's #2 had a crease and bounced to the outside, but #31 Dominic Ryan came up with a big hit stopping him short of the first down giving the ball back to the Mustangs.  On first down, Gloucester fumbled the snap.  After a short gain on 2nd down and loss of 3 on third down, the Mustangs faced a 4th and 11.  QB Aydan Hagan dropped back looking deep for Jacob Zearfoss, and there was contact between Zearfoss and the defender which resulted in a Pass Interference call on the defense giving Gloucester a 1st and goal at the 11 yd line.  On 1st down, Jacob Zearfoss would take the handoff around the end with the great blocks of John Daily, Josh Dockery, and the left side of the Offensive line.  The play would result in the game winning Touchdown, and the Mustangs are heading to the Championship with a 12-6 win over a great team in St. Petes.  The win gives (10-0) Gloucester a date with the (9-1) Maple Shade Tigers at Robbinsville HS in the League Championship on Saturday Nov 23rd at 11 am.

Ryan Malone scores his 2nd TD in the first half
On Sunday Nov 10th, the WJYFL South Conference 60 pound champs traveled to Florence to play Bordentown in one of the Florence 60 pound Bowl games.  The Mustangs continued to roll with a 13-0 victory.  The shutout was the defense's 5th of the year, and the 60s record moves to (8-1) on the season.  Ryan Malone led the Mustangs with 2 TDs, and Anthony Capano added the extra point.  Gloucester led 13-0 at the half, and scored two more TDs in the second half, but both were called back for holding.  Trevin Burkhardt, Mason Widman, Jake Smith, and Stevie Canning had tackles for the Mustangs Defense.  The 60s will host a rematch with the Oaklyn Cougars Sat Nov 16th at Home at 10 am.

QB #7 Aydan Hagan led Gloucester to a 38-7 win over Haddon Twp

Big Hit by #34 Hector Sancez & #23 Josh Dockery
On Saturday Nov 9th, the #1 seeded Gloucester Mustangs 80s hosted the #4 seeded Haddon Twp Hawks in the first round of the WJYFL playoffs.  The game started off with a bang as Jacob Zearfoss took the first hand-off 50 yards around the left end for a TD, and the Mustangs never looked back.  Zearfoss had 4 TDs total as the Mustangs led 38-0 after 3 quarters.  John Daily added a long TD after a breaking a tackle in the backfield in the 2nd quarter, as he raced 40 yds for the Gloucester TD.  Josh Dockery closed the scoring the for Mustangs with a 3 yard TD plunge in the 3rd quarter.  The Gloucester defense played great all day with big hits coming from Hector Sanchez and Derek Levins.  The shutout was broken up in the 4th quarter as Andrew Crawford ran for a 40 yd TD as Gloucester went on to win 38-7 moving their record to (9-0) on the season, and setting themselves up with a rematch with (8-1) St. Petes.  The game will be November 16th at 12 pm.

The 110s lost 18-6 to the #1 seeded Hawks
The #4 seeded Mustangs 110s traveled to Haddon Twp to face the top seeded Hawks.  The Hawks won the first matchup 25-13, but the Mustangs were missing two key players.  Haddon Twp would jump out to a 12-0 lead going into the half.  Gloucester didn't quit as they quickly grabbed the momentum in the 3rd quarter cutting the lead to 12-6 on an Interception return by Joey Pinto for a Touchdown.  Later in the game, it looked as if the Mustangs would even the score as Jarred Matchett put a big hit on the Hawks' RB who caught a screen pass and Charlie Wigginton returned the fumble for a TD, but the the referee said the RB did not have possession and the ball stayed with Haddon Twp.  The Hawks would eventually add another score, giving them an 18-6 lead and the Mustangs would be eliminated from the playoffs.  The Haddon Twp (18-16) win would give them a date with Westville in the Conference Semifinals.  Gloucester's season ended with a (4-5) record, but the Mustangs have nothing to be ashamed as they doubled their win total from last season in what ended up being the toughest conference in the league.  Great Job to the players and coaching staff on a great season.

The 130s ended the season with a (6-3) record
The 3rd seeded Mustangs 130s traveled to Pine Hill to face the 2nd seeded Rams.  Gloucester was penalized a lot early, but the game was still tight as Gloucester trailed 6-0 late in the 2nd quarter in a defensive battle.  The Mustangs went aerial late in the 2nd quarter trying to tie the game before halftime, but Pine Hill was ready as they intercepted Qb - Nathaniel Kidd and raced up the sidelines for a TD giving the Rams a 12-0 lead at the half.  Despite the deficit, the Mustangs defense was still playing tough as Kyle Burkhardt, Austin Pilloro, and Joe Shipp were making tackles for Gloucester.  The 130s season ended with a (6-3) record and a lot of positives after losing two of their biggest offensive weapons to injuries including RB - Jack Dibenedictis, who was one of the better players in the entire league.  The boys showed a lot of heart, and increased their win total by 5 wins this season after winning just 1 game last yr.  The Mustangs proved that the program is heading in the right direction.

#55 Nicholas Ekimoglou had a fumble recovery for 80s JV
On Sunday Nov 3rd, the Gloucester Mustangs 80s JV squad traveled to face the Seneca Eagles.  The Mustangs would lead from start to finish, as they jumped out to an early 12-0 lead on their way to a 31-0 win over the Eagles.  Hector Sanchez and TJ Thomas had 2 TDs each to lead the Mustangs. The defense pitched their first shut out of the season, as Andrew Pinto, Jack Radlinger, Ayden Daily, Jaden Sori, & Jake Seibert each made tackles for the Mustangs. Jayden Cox also added a tackle before leaving with an injury.  Nicholas Ekimoglou added a fumble recovery.  The win gives the 80s JV a (7-1) record on the season.

#21 Stevie Canning is chasing down the GT Stallions' RB

Gloucester 60s JV hosted two games this week.  On Monday Nov 4th, the 60s JV hosted the Washington Twp Minutemen.  The Mustangs led 13-12 late in the 4th quarter as Donovan Robinson scored two TDs for Gloucester, and Tristan Garcia added the go-ahead extra point.  The Mustangs defense hung tough allow just 12 points, but Twp would add another with 30 secs left to take an 18-13 lead.  Gloucester would have 1 last chance, but they fumbled the handoff.  The Mustangs would drop the game 18-13.  On Friday Nov 8th, the 60s JV hosted the GT Stallions.  The Mustangs would drop their second straight game, as the Stallions would jump to an early 7-0 lead in the first quarter on their way to a 13-7 score.  The loss pushed Gloucesters 60s JV record to (1-3-1) on the season.

New Look Mustangs renew winning tradition on the gridiron

The Gloucester City Mustangs were sporting a new look this fall.  They traded in the Vegas Gold for a more "Lion-like" Athletic Gold, and the response from parents/kids/fans has been great.  The Mustangs have had many different looks over the years.  Some might remember the red white & blue uniforms in the 50s or the red & black uniforms in the 60s & 70s.  More people will remember the Orange & Brown uniforms most of us wore in the 80s & early 90s.  The late 90s saw the switch to Navy blue with vegas Gold helmets.  The Gold Helmets were evenutally traded in for Navy, and now the Vegas Gold in the jersey has switched to Athletic Gold like the Lions of Gloucester High School.

95 boys showing off the Mustangs new look
The new look represents a new era for the Mustangs program.  Over the last decade, you could see the overall numbers were dwindling.  Just 5 years ago, the program as whole had only about 85 kids.  In 2013, our numbers increased to 125 kids.  President Mike Johnson talked about the increase, "Gloucester Football is back on the rise.  In the past 4 or 5 years, our numbers have gone up from 87 to 125 and it's looking like getting more every year.  This year we had 3 out of 4 teams make the playoffs, and our 60s, who don't have playoffs, suffered just 1 loss.  The future is bright."  Part of the increase in registration, has been the hard work of all of the coaches and parents in fundraising which has helped the Mustangs have one of the cheapest registration prices in South Jersey.  Treasurer and 130s coach John Kidd talks about the success and registration, "It's really great to see 4 out of 5 teams with winning records and 3 out of 4 teams making the playoffs."  He went on to say, "Registration has increased over the last 3 years, while the registration prices have been at an all time low."  The Mustangs have always been an organization that puts the money raised back into the kids.  With the increase in numbers, the organization has had to spend over $10,000 in the last two years on uniforms and equipment for the kids.  With new equipment and a new look, the Mustangs have brought back their winning ways.
80 lb team celebrates their win as the final whistle was blown.

Dave Smith, the 110s coach, said, "The main reason we were so successful this year was through the hard work of the parents, coaches, and players.  We're looking to expand our organization even more next year."  Another part of the expansion has been development of a few Junior Varsity teams at the younger levels, which has been instituted because of the spike in numbers.  The 60 lb and 80 lb teams have had about 60 kids total the last two seasons between the two teams.  Vice President and 80s coach, Chad Zearfoss said, "The Junior Varsity teams are going to be a key to the programs success especially at the younger levels.  Instead of having 12-15 kids playing on 1 team each week, we're getting 25-30 kids playing in 2 different games.  Sometimes it takes a kid a year or two to adjust to the sport of football, and one day it just clicks.  The JV programs give these boys that chance to get acccustom to the sport without being thrown to the wolves at the Varsity level.  Our 80s JV program has had great success so far this season with a (7-1) record.  They still played in almost every one of the Varsity games, but even if they didn't, each kid knew they were going to get plenty of chances to play in the JV game that week."  Harry Ulmer, the 60s coach, added, "The hard work of the entire organization has really been evident this season.  From the coaches to the parents, to the players.  Everyone has has a helping hand in the organization's turnaround.  I couldn't be prouder to say my family is part of the Mustangs' organization."
110s Coach Dave Smith gets his team ready
The success and growth of the organization has made the transition to the field of play with 4 out of 5 teams with winning records, two Reg Season Conference Champions and 3 out of 4 playoff berths.  The 60s were (7-1) on the year, and were crowned the WJYFL South Conference Champions since they do not have playoffs for that weight class.  The 60s will play Bordentown in the Florence 60s Bowl game at Florence Sunday Nov 10th at 12:30 pm. The 80s went (8-0) on the season, earning the #1 seed and the Regular Season WJYFL South Conference Championship.  The 80s will host Haddon Twp on Saturday Nov 9th at 12 pm.  The 95s season  ended this past Saturday, as the (1-7) Mustangs did not clinch a playoff berth.  The 110s clinched the 4th seed and a playoff berth.  They travel to Haddon Twp Saturday Nov 9th at 7 pm.  The 130s have won their last 4 games enroute to a (6-2) record on the season. As the 3rd seed, Gloucester will travel to Pine Hill Saturday Nov 9th at 2 pm.  Come out and support the boys.

The 80s were also battling for the WJYFL South Conference Regular Season Championship and the #1 seed for playoffs.  They faced yet another battle of the unbeatens vs. the (7-0) Saints.  Gloucester jumped out 6-0 early on a reverse by John Daily, who made a great move passed the defender on his way for a touchdown.  On Gloucester's second drive, Jacob Zearfoss broke away from the pack for a long run, but was run down by St. Pete's Kenneth Carter on the two yard line.  The next play, Zearfoss scored to give the Mustangs a 12-0 lead.  St. Petes didn't quit, coming right back with a long TD run by Carter cutting the lead to 12-7 at the half.  St. Pete's other RB scored on the first play of the 4th quarter giving the Saints a 13-12 lead.  The Mustangs didn't back down as they milked the clock under 4 mins in the game and punched in a 1 yd TD to take an 18-13 lead with 3 mins left.  After 3 short gains, Gloucester's Dominic Ryan came up with a big tackle on Carter to stop the Saints with 2 mins left in the game.  A few players later, Zearfoss added his 3rd TD of the game and Gloucester sealed their 24-13 victory giving them an (8-0) record, #1 seed and the Regular Season Conference Championship.  The 80s host the Haddon Twp Hawks this Saturday Nov 9th at 12 pm.
The 80 lb team wins the Reg Season Conference Championship
#9 Chris Dolson gets his 2nd INT of the day

The 95s had a defensive battle with the Saints for most of the game, but couldn't generate enough offense for the win.  Chris Dolson had two INTs for the Gloucester defense, and Cody Bathurst, Mike Morrell, Dylan Pinto, and Steven Burkhardt stood out defensively for the Mustangs.  Steven Burkhardt added a late TD for Gloucester as they dropped a 24-6 loss to the Saints.  The 95s season ended with a (1-7) record.
#23 Joey Pinto returned an INT for a TD in the big win
The 110s who needed to win to get into the playoffs, hosted the Florence Flashes.  The Mustangs scored early and often on their way to a 46-6 win.  Jarred Matchet took his first carry up the sideline for a long TD with Pinto catching the extra pt.  Joey Pinto then picked off the Flashes' QB and returned it for a TD giving Gloucester an early 13-0 lead.  The Flashes Kick Returner then returned the ensuing kick inside Gloucester's 5 yd line, and two plays later, the score was 13-6.  That was the last bit of offense Florence would get.  Gavin Callahan threw a long TD pass to Junior Barnum.  Normally Offensive Linemen Mikey Capra, Andrew Lamb, and Charlie Wigginton all lined up at Rb making their dreams come true getting carries and scoring Touchdowns for the Mustangs.  The win gave Gloucester a (4-4) record and the 4th seed in the South Conference.  Gloucester will travel to Haddon Twp Saturday night at 7 pm.

130s geting ready for action against Seneca
The 130s continued to win despite two key injuries with a (19-0) win over the Seneca Eagles.  Gloucester's Kyle Burkhardt had two TDs, a receiving TD from Quarterback Nathaniel Kidd, and Burkhardt also recovered a Fumble in the end zone.  Austin Pilloro added a rushing TD for the Mustangs.  Joey Shipp, AJ Radlinger, Shayne McCabe, and Treyvon Jackson played great for Gloucester's defense as they pitched the shutout.  Gloucesters 130s ended the regular season with a (6-2) record and the #3 seed in the South Conference.  They will travel to Pine Hill Saturday afternoon to square off against the Pine Hill Rams at 2 pm.
#44 Maddox Zane had a TD and XP for the 80s JV

The 80s JV hosted the Sterling Knights.  TJ Thomas ran for two TDs, and Maddox Zane added a TD and an extra pt for the Mustangs.  The defense played outstanding allowing just 1 TD to the Knights on their way to a 19-7 victory over the visitors.  Tim Dick added a fumble recovery for Gloucester.  The win gives the 80s JV a (6-1) record on the season.
The 60s JV traveled to Washington Twp to face the Minutemen.  The Mustangs won (13-7) over the Minutemen as Donvan Robinson and Stevie Canning scored TDs for Gloucester.  Harry Ulmer added an extra pt to round out the scoring.  Gloucester's defense played great as they allowed just 7 pts in the win.  The win gives Gloucester 60s JV a (1-1-1) record on the season
